Tempe-based online car-seller Carvana has submitted plans to expand its corporate campus in the city, by adding over 240,000 square feet of new office space in the growing Rio Salado employment zone.
Carvana plans to build two office buildings and two parking garages on a 15-acre parcel near the southeast corner of Rio Salado Parkway and Priest Drive. The company already has an office at that location.
The company plans to hire more than 1,000 new employees and needs additional space, the company said in planning documents submitted to the city, according to the Arizona Republic, which reported that a Tempe spokesperson confirmed the new positions will be local.
“Carvana’s online platform for purchasing, financing and selling used cars has become particularly attractive for customers given the challenges and hardships created by the Covid-19 pandemic,” zoning attorney Wendy Riddell wrote in the submission. “Carvana’s business continues to thrive and grow, and as such, it is seeking to expand its presence in Tempe with this proposal for a unique office development.”
Carvana is a leader in the used-car market with its web-based online purchase model. The company offers a seven-day return policy. It gained notoriety for its large vehicle vending machine located off the Loop 202 along Scottsdale Road.
